On Tuesday, I managed to go to the gym and was on the elliptical for 51 minutes altogether. I did some weight lifting for a few more minutes and then went home because it was beginning to get late. I stopped by CVS on the way home and bought a stronger anti-fungal treatment for my ringworm; Tinactin- or at least its generic version- along with some more band aids and anti-fungal soap. I've been using them every day since Tuesday and already it looks as if the thing is gone...which is a vast improvement over how it looked even a few days ago.

I stayed up late texting John and as such as tired when I got up in the morning. I worked Wednesday and Thursday and everything was pretty much the same as it has been. My late evenings on both nights, however, were punctuated by late night phone calls from John, both of which were amazing and hot.

During all of this, I've read more of John Adams, and yesterday, I finished the first season of 'Downton Abbey'. Bekah's package of food goodies and the book The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan came in the mail as well. I have read 3 books now this year, and so far, only one has not been on my reading list.

I was going to go out to the gym, but the temperature around 5:15 made me change my mind, though I did walk up and back to the mail box and did some backwards pedaling on the crappy exercise bike in the kitchen. I also have eaten very well today, so that's something in my favor; eggs and toast with jam and tea and OJ for breakfast, small piece of steak with pasta and edamame for dinner and some of the goodies in the box Bekah sent.

I talked with Bekah while doing the dishes and laundry before I chatted with John via Skype for a good long while. 35 more days until I can see him in person. I'm looking forward to it much more now...especially since we established that my fetish for a hot teacher is alive and well. What? XD

I just can't see BJ and Hawkeye getting together. Mostly because BJ is married and Hawkeye is a chronic womanizer.

They talk for hours in Inara's shuttle and then end up kissing. A real kiss that they're both aware of and conscious for, and Mal finally admits his damn feelings for her.

I'm just not as into the Watchmen fandom as much as I used to be anymore. I still love the novel and the movie, but I'm kind of "Eh" about it now.

For the longest time, I’ve been wanting to take a road trip across America, particularly after the completion of a Grand Event; graduating from college or something like that. But, since I have yet to actually complete college, and the only Grand Event that’s going to happen in my life soon will be the marriage of Emmy, one of my best friends, sometime this year, I figure after that will be a good time to go on the Great Cross-Country Road Trip. She, myself and our mutual friend Mary are shooting for 2012 or 2013, since we will all be in better financial situations by then, or at least that’s the hope.

We had planned to also go to New York on this trip, but since I’m coming from New Hampshire, and both Emmy and Mary live in West Virginia, I think me flying down to them and us leaving from their homes, like we did in 2008 on our road trip to Kentucky, would be easier and better in the long run. It’s already going to be a long trip without adding New York onto it.

I would like to go back to New York City one of these days, though.

At the 200 lb mark

I’m down now from starting at 206.5 to being 200.5. Not too bad for a month, but I could probably do a lot better. Just by walking or using the exercise bike in the kitchen more, I could probably start losing at least two pounds a week.

I was sick recently and it took my appetite for a few days. I’m going to assume that helped with some of this weight loss. The trick will be keeping it off and maintaining without sickness “helping” me in that way.

I’m still eating a lot of fruits and salads; we bought oranges and I had about six in three days or so. I also made sure to still at least have salad and healthier bread products. I’ve begun snacking on saltines and animal crackers {for when I need something sweet} and will see how the oyster crackers my Dad bought taste.

Soup is going to become a big part of my diet, and I’m going to load up on juices and lemonades and teas to ensure I don’t fall off the wagon and load up on soda. If that means only bringing enough money for the tolls or even leaving my debit card in the car at work, so be it.

I’m determined to be at least 185 by March. Hopefully 172 if I can help it, but we’ll see.

One other good thing about being sick; since I ate at a fast food restaurant the night before I got sick, I’m kind of turned off by a lot of fast food. True, I had a Frosty last night, but I also had a salad, and just the salad instead of a Wendy’s meal went a long way in helping me.

A new year already?

So, since it's a new year, I need to seriously focus on updating this thing more. I need to focus on more important things first, obviously, but my readers {how few there are of you}...I have an obligation, damn it!

I took a count, which took awhile, and I watched 191 films last year. That's about 15 films or so a month. I also read 32 books, which is about 2 books a month. One of my goals for this year is to read 50 books, and so far, I have read one this year; Dealing With Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede. It's a re-read, but it's something, I suppose.

I feel like watching 191 movies in a year has to be a record of some sort. As it is, I'm well on my way to blowing it out of the water. So far this year, I've watched 8 films. 8 films in 6 days. I know I could try harder, but since moving up to New Hampshire, my movie-watching has declined significantly. Probably because I have to choose between the internet and a movie, where I didn't have to down in Maryland. There's no wireless in this house, unfortunately, because of the mountains. Hopefully, I can get that 100 or 150 foot USB cable and bring myself out into the living room, or even my own room, and get to watching and interneting at the same time again.

Real Post: Weight and Loss

So, taking a page from MK's blog 'Fat Club' {which I follow but am not a part of}, I've decided to follow the ladies and actually start losing some of this horrendous weight I have on me.

As of the other day, I was 206 pounds. While not as bad as I thought it would be, I was still horrified that I'm still in the 200 lb region. I haven't been "thin" since elementary school, and the "thinnest" I ever was in high school was around 150 lbs. That's not "thin" for my height {5'6"}, but I looked pretty good at that weight. I started losing weight in 2007, and the highest I was was 172.

In short, for right now, I'd like to get back to 172 by February. 34 lbs in 3 months. I think I could realistically do this. And safely, since when you lose weight slowly, it stays off {or so they say}.

What will have to happen, though, is I have to cut my caloric intake. I'm not sure how much I eat on a given day, but it has to be a lot. I plan to eat about 1300 calories a day, and thankfully Progresso makes delicious soups that are anywhere from 90-140ish calories. So, just by adding more soup to my diet, I can make this doable.

Another thing that has to happen; I have to exercise again. I have to either join the gym down the street or make use of the exercise bike/machine in the kitchen. Work is going to make it hard to exercise regularly, especially with the holidays coming up, but even if I don't join the gym, I could do at least 30 minutes a day.

MK and Mara did 5 reasons they want to lose weight. Here are mine:

1. I want to be back into a size 12. Or even a 10.
2. I want to feel attractive to the opposite sex.
3. I want the stretch marks on my body to leave.
4. I want to be healthier all around.
5. I want my rings to fit again!

In short, I want to look like this again:

I think starting a food diary will help a lot with this. Looks like I'll be obsessed with calories! Woo!

He's close to my age, and surprisingly so, since most of the celebs I crush on are between 32-48. He's 26, and I'm 22 going on 23. Plus he's adorable.

BUT! If polyandry were an option; Chris Marquette, Robert Downey Jr., Clifton Collins Jr., Jason Sudeikis and Jensen Ackles. All of that.

'MAS*H' recast

In my current conversation with Dean {going on now}, we got to talking about Clifton Collins Jr. and I mentioned that in 'Tigerland' he looked like Klinger and that I could see him playing Klinger if they ever re-made 'M*A*S*H' into a movie or a tv series. So, here are my picks for who I think could and in some cases HAVE to play them.

Bradley Cooper as Hawkeye Pierce. Bradley has played some assy people, and while Hawkweye is a gifted surgeon {something I think Bradley could play with aplomb}, he's a HUGE ass.

Jason Sudeikis as Trappper John McIntyre. I initially had Jason as B.J., but this photo just SCREAMS Trapper to me. Trapper is a likeable character, but like Hawkeye, he is an ass, he just has more charm to him to excuse it.

Peter Sarsgaard as B.J. Hunnicutt. I had Peter initially as Trapper, but the more I looked at him, the more I could see him as B.J. It would be nice to see him in a role that isn't creepy or dramatic, and I'd like to see his take on how B.J. deals with being apart from his wife and daughter for so long.

Kelsey Grammer as Charles Emerson Winchester III. I mean...there's no explanation needed. He IS Charles.

Clifton Collins Jr. as Maxwell Q. Klinger. I initially thought Fred Armisen was the best choice for Klinger, but I think Clifton would do a wonderful job, and would probably bring an even deeper level to the character than there already is.

Sarah Chalke as Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan. Sarah has the looks, and she has the shrillness of Margaret, and the subtle emotionality that's needed for the role.

Will Forte as Frank Burns. This photo of Will is an old one, but he looks so much like Larry Linville as Frank, that there's no one else I can see playing him. He's good at being a buffoon, now I'd like to see him be a hated buffoon.

John Mahoney as Colonel Potter. Like Kelsey Grammer as Winchester, John Mahoney IS Colonel Potter.

Anton Yelchin as Walter "Radar" O'Reilly. He would make a more believable 19 year old than Gary Burghoff ever did. Plus, he still has the innocent look about him that would make him a believable Radar.

Steve Zahn as Father Mulcahy. I think he would be the perfect embodiment of the soft-spoken priest who also knows how to throw a good punch when it's needed.

Adam Goldberg as Sidney Freedman. Literally, who else could you see as Sidney?

General Blogging
Well, things have changed quite a lot since my last post. When was that? May? June? In a nutshell, I had 3 jobs and an insane amount of stress. My friend moved in, which didn't really go according to plan/how we hoped it would go. I'm moving to New Hampshire on the 25th of September {12 days!} and have been under an AMAZINGLY huge amount of stress because of all of this. Did I mention that? I think I did.

Thankfully, though, I don't work anywhere again until sometime after I get to New Hampshire, thereby allowing me to wrap up things in Maryland, continue packing, pay bills and change my address for everything pertinent in my life.

Movie News:
-Stephen King's The Dark Tower series is going to be getting both a movie and a TV treatment. Words can't express how happy I am...or was until I realized that Ron Howard has directed both 'Angels and Demons' and 'The DaVinci Code'. Eeee.

I can't think of a better way to present the material, though, so I'm happy with this outcome. Now I just need to see if the casting will cause me to rage or not.

Actor News:
-There was a possibility that Martin Freeman would be playing Bilbo Baggins in the 'Hobbit' films. Apparently, this was a rumor, and it's not going to happen. While I like him as an actor, I cannot see him as Bilbo. My top two choices for Bilbo are either Simon Pegg or Michael Sheen. Considering how well the Lord of the Rings films were cast, I know I probably won't have anything to worry about.

Most Recent Movie(s) I've Seen in Theatres:
'Going the Distance'

Directed by Nanette Burstein, and starring Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis and Christina Applegate, the film is about a couple, Garrett {Justin Long} and Erin {Drew Barrymore} whose one-night stand turns into a long term relationship, and eventually a long-distance one when she has to move from New York back to San Francisco to finish her last year of grad school. Unlike most chick flicks, guys could like this and probably would. It's a little cruder than I was expecting, but that was refreshing. Justin Long and Drew Barrymore were a cute couple {especially since they did/are dating/I don't even know in real life} and most of all believable.

The supporting cast of Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day and Christina Applegate were amazing, as well, which was a nice change, especially since most supporting actors in a romantic comedy can fade into the background.

Overall, I give it an A-. It felt a bit long in some parts, but at just under 2 hours, it's almost a new phenomenon in movies today.

Grade: A-

Most Recent Book(s) I've Finished:
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

After watching 'Capote' for the third or fourth time, I figured it was time to read the book. I'd never read anything of Capote's before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. He was an amazingly talented writer, and I fully intend on getting more of his books. The book was one of the first true crime novels ever written, about the deaths of the Clutter family in 1959 in Kansas and the subsequent tracking, capture and execution of their killers; Perry Smith and Richard "Dick" Hickock.

The book, while not a quick read, moves along very steadily, and never once did I lose interest in the story or what was going on. One thing that struck me was that the more I read about the killers, I felt a mixture of disgust, horror and sympathy. In 'Capote', Truman says to Perry that he doesn't want the world to see him "as a monster". And it's no small feat that Capote has managed to humanize the killers,and Perry especially, since he was the one who killed the entire family. And even after reading, and realizing that Perry was a sociopath, I still manage to feel sympathy for him because of the atrocious upbringing he had. It's no excuse for what he did, but in a way...I guess I can understand it more. He said to Truman, "They [The Clutters] never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it's just that the Clutters were the ones who had to pay for it."

I feel it's a book everyone should read.

Grade: A+

Dark Tower casting call

Aside from de-aging Clint Eastwood {who basically is Roland}, Viggo is the only logical choice.

Whenever I read the books, I always always picture Brendan as Eddie.

Colin Ford as Jake Chambers

He's basically the living embodiment of Jake, and the only one I think could actually pull off that role, and do it well. If they wait too long, though, he will become too old to play Jake.

Gina Torres as Susannah Dean/Detta Walker

She is the only person I can see playing Susannah/Detta and being able to do it well. Zoe Saldana has been suggested, and while I'm not against that, I still think Gina would do a much better job.

I had a few; 'Mulan', 'Ferngully', 'Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland' and 'Aladdin'. 'Mulan' and 'Aladdin' have stood the test of time. 'Ferngully' I have no desire to see ever again, and I recently re-watched 'Little Nemo'...I feel genuine sorrow for my parents having to be subjected to it so many times.

I've been wanting to go since I was a kid, and the need intensified once I became interested in the history and decided to make a large part of my education about medieval/Renaissance English history. Plus, the places! Westminster Abbey, Hyde Park, Royal Albert Hall, Stonehenge, Bath, Suffolk, London, Manchester, Liverpool...I could go on. I would also use the trip to visit Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

And if not England, then Japan. I would go there in a heartbeat.

Review: 'The Last Airbender'

I should start out by saying what I said in my Twitter post last night directly after seeing the film: "No one see 'The Last Airbender'. It is ABYSMAL beyond belief. I am shocked and appalled. M. Night Shayamalan should be beaten in the street."

I initially was not going to go anywhere near this film after hearing how it progressed before it was actually filmed; the casting of all whites in the main roles, changing the calligraphy on maps to "unreadable sigils", altering whole characters' personalities to make the movie more serious. That last bit was one of the MAIN reasons I was against the film, but I'll get to that in a moment.

I'm sure some people somewhere out there who haven't seen the film will go, "Oh, it's just a live action adaptation of a cartoon. How bad could it possibly be?" To them, and to everyone who still hasn't see it, I say, "Go watch the cartoon, fall in love with those characters and their struggles and triumphs and quirks. Then go watch the film. Make sure you spend $10 like I did {even with a student discount}, and see these things that make the series wonderful raped and pummeled before your very eyes."

I missed the very first part of the movie because we were late getting to the theatre, but since I'd seen the series {now on my second go-around}, I knew what was going on already.

As I mentioned before, whole characters' personalities were altered and changed. Nowhere was that more apparent than in the character of Sokka. He is the comic relief of the show, quite obviously from the beginning, and is the "brains" of the gang, being more science-minded than anything else. He makes hilarious and often clever observations and is a strong warrior, much like his sister Katara and friend Aang, the Avatar.

The Sokka, excuse me, 'So-kah', of the film, is none of these things. He is a serious, angry seeming young man, wearing a constant expression of constipation who can't seem to get a sentence out faster than two years. I've seen Jackson Rathbone in exactly two films, and I am not impressed whatsoever. He needs to either pick a new acting coach or just GTFO because he has sucked majorly so far.

Katara, while she still retained the correct pronunciation of her name {I'll get to that in a moment as well}, seemed like she was always breathless and on the verge of tears half the time. She didn't seem like a very competent water bender, and unlike her counterpart in the series, is not someone I would want on my side in a fight.

Aang, excuse me, 'Ong', the all-powerful Avatar, had a look of frightened constipation half the time. This was his only real fault, as unlike the other two actors, he seemed to actually trying to give it his all.

Most of the series' events was explained through montages and Katara's narration, before it finally got to the climactic battle at the Northern Water Tribe where Aang is able to summon a massive tidal wave, wiping out all the Fire Nation ships in one fell swoop and saving the Northern Water Tribe, and the rest of our heroes.

Most of the movie seemed as if M.Night had skimmed over the wikipedia article for the first series, and then filmed it based on what he could remember. The bending, which was beautiful and rapid fire, and based on actual tai chi/martial arts moves, was more like expressive dancing in the film. And boy was it slow. By the time Katara had summoned a water globe, which leaked constantly, by the way, she should've been overtaken by at least two people.

The pronunciation of the names; 'So-kah' instead of 'Sock-a', 'Ong' instead of 'Ang', and things/places/other people; 'Ag-knee-kee' instead of 'Ag-knee-kai' and 'Ah-vah-tar' instead of 'Ava-tar' bothered me on different levels. On the one hand, the director was apparently trying to go "closer to the Asian pronunciation", but on the other, when these names and things are the ONLY things that have their pronunciation altered, it looks sloppy and amateurish. ESPECIALLY in context with the show. I don't care if you're trying to make it closer to the Asian pronunciation, keep it the same way it has been!

Now, we get to the part that most people, including myself, have issue with; that of the races of the characters in this film. In the show, all of the characters are clearly Asian of some sort. Those from the Water Tribe are Inuit. Those from the Earth Kingdom are a mixture of Japanese and Korean {I'm speculating on this, judging from the written characters and the architecture of the cities of Omashu and Ba Sing Se, as well as the names of these places and various characters; Haru, Ju Dee, etc}. Those from the Fire Nation are Japanese/Chinese {again, judging from the names of the characters; Mai, Azula, Zuko, Zhao, Iroh, Tai Lee, and the places}. Those from the Air Nation {not sure if this is correct, but I'm not saying "The Air Nomad Nation" like the film did} are Tibetan monks, pure and simple. You could argue that Aang's features are ambiguously white/Asian, but I have always seen him as Asian, so we will stick with that.

SO, bearing all of this in mind, I don't understand the reasoning behind changing the races of these people, and especially in such a half-assed way. Katara, Sokka and their grandmother are all white...in a village of ENTIRELY ASIAN/INUIT PEOPLE. The Fire Nation went from being Japanese/Chinese to being Indian. That wouldn't have been a problem, since Indians are Asians, except that they weren't that way to begin with! Zuko originally was going to be played by Jesse McCartney, another white dude, but "scheduling conflicts" forced him to drop out, and Dev Patel was cast as Zuko.

You can't tell me that there are no big name Asian actors and actresses who could've been cast in these roles and would have drawn people to the theatres. There's a plethora of Asian actors out there, many of whom are big names, that SHOULD'VE been in this film. Ken Watanabe could've been Uncle Iroh for Christ's sake!

Most of the Asians that I saw in the film were portrayed as largely inept and stupid, and it offended me, a non-Asian person. Example; the three leads are taken to an Earth bending refugee camp after some Fire Nation soliders see Katara water bending to help an Earth bender child who had come upon them, clearly needing help. The refugee camp was in an area SURROUNDED by earth...yet after a "stirring" speech from Aang, they fought and overtook the Fire Nation soldiers guarding the camp.

So, what you're telling me is; a huge group of Asians needed help from whites in order to get them motivated? In order to get them to see the OBVIOUS solution that was right in front of them? Every other village they went to and liberated, including a village of black people, ensuring no minorities were left out, despite the fact that there WERE no black people in the series, probably could've done the same thing on their own without help from three teenagers.

I could go on and on ad nauseum and I would still be saying the exact same thing about the race issue in this film, so I'll move on from this, but will direct you to look at a site that can probably say these things a lot better than I can: Racebending.com

Last issues I had with the movie, aside from EVERYTHING:

-All exposition was explained by either narration or through characters "figuring out" what was going on. Granted, they had to put a whole season of a show into a film, but come on. 'Lord of the Rings' did it much better, as did many other films.
-The use of extreme close-ups, to the point of a huge close up of one character's eye was unnecessary and, I thought, overdone.
-The camera angles were ridiculous as well, with half of the actor's faces being cut off from the frame as they were speaking to one another.
-More changing of characters, and a huge one at that; Fire Lord Ozai was seen prominently in this film. He showed compassion and worry over the fact that he hadn't heard from his son, Zuko, in quite some time. DESPITE the fact that he had banished the kid for talking back to one of his generals. Fire Lord Ozai was not seen, though he was heard, until halfway through season 3, and he had an enormous presence.
-The sets and costumes were a joke. Minimal effort was made, like with most things in this film, to ensure proper clothing for the characters and making sure the sets were correct for the places of the Nations.

I can't think of anything else to say, except for three things:
1} M.Night Shayamalan, please for the love of everything holy, STOP writing your films. You SUCK at writing. Also, you owe me and everyone else who sat through this tripe at least $10 and 2 hours of their life back.

2} Everyone who has not done so, please please please see the television show. Don't let the fact that it's a cartoon derail you from doing so. I was very much a skeptic, but after seeing 4 episodes of the first season, I was hooked. I watched the entire first season in 12 hours and ordered the other two, and my own copy of season 1, as I did so. It really is worth your time to see it.

3} Roger Ebert said it best when he said in his review of this film: "'The Last Airbender' is an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented. The laws of chance suggest that something should have gone right...I close with the hope that the title proves prophetic." Source

So do I, Mr. Ebert. So do I.

Hmm, well, it seems my promise to once again not neglect this has been broken. Life gets in the way, okay? I can't just jump through hoops for people and post all the time. Even my LJ and my food blog have been suffering thanks to the schedule I'm on.

My weekdays are thus:
-7:15 AM: Wake up, get dressed, grab something quick for breakfast
-8:15 AM: In Starbucks in Greenbelt for my additional, or second, breakfast of a tall hot chocolate and a blueberry scone/Mallorca sweet bread/plain bagel with cream cheese, while I read a large book to wile away the minutes
-9:15 AM: Clock into work
-9:30-9:55 AM: Unload the stock truck
-10:30/10:45-11:45 AM: Put out stock onto sales floor
-11:50-12:30/1:30 PM: Unload boxes
-1:30-1:45/1:45-2 PM: 15 minute break
-1:45/2PM: Back to work hanging clothes
-2:45: Put out clothes onto sales floor
-3 PM: So long, suckers!

I don't work my second job until Fridays, and that's always 4-9. Some days, I drop Mom off at her second job and then go to the gym at my school for an hour {sometimes a little less} and roleplay/watch movies. I also do this on days when she's not at her second job.

Weekends are strictly me time, where I can sleep in and stay in my pajamas all day.

I am thankful for the 3 day weekend I have this time around. Thanks to Memorial Day on Monday, we get no stock truck, so the stock associates don't have to come in. Bliss!

In Other News:
*I have yet another celebrity crush to add to the growing multitude of them. Michael Sheen is a god among men, and I try as hard as I can to block out that he was in the Underworld films {though I loved the 1st one for awhile} and the new Twilight movies {JUST...NO}, despite the fact he looks fine as fuck as a werewolf.

Awww yeah.

Normally, he's a talented actor in films such as 'The Music Within' {he plays a man with cerebral palsy}, 'The Queen', 'Frost/Nixon', 'The Damned United' and has guest starred as one of my favorite TV characters ever on '30 Rock'. And through it all, he has retained that charming geekiness.

Also, I firmly believe he should be the person playing Bilbo Baggins in 'The Hobbit'. Who can I talk to to make this happen?

*I'm currently trying to save up for a trip to Florida in October for the Food and Wine Festival at Epcot. It'll be my 3rd time going to Disney World, and I predict this one will be even better than the last. Chief among those reasons is because it's much less expensive than the last trip, we're flying this time, and because I can drink if I like {I will be}.
There was talk about a tequila tasting, in between all the wine and food tastings, so that should be interesting.

*Muse's new song 'Neutron Star Collision' is on the 'Eclipse' soundtrack {3rd in the 'Twilight' series}, and even though the song is legit cheesy and sappy, and I get blinded by rage if I have to recall what it's associated with, I love this song.

And speaking of Muse, I'm seeing them for the 5th time in October, after the Florida trip, in Virginia with my very good friend Davey, who is moving here from Kentucky on June 3rd. We plan to meet them after the show, and I hope we are successful in this venture.

Well, despite my best efforts, I have once again begun neglecting this thing. This time letting two months go by before I make a real blog post. When I use my Livejournal {see, Tim, not only Russians and emos use LJ still}, I use it as my diary, and to mainly help me keep track of all the things I do on a given day/week/whenever I update it. As it is, I can barely remember to make a daily post on that thing, so this gets more neglect.

I'm sorry little blogger. As Muse say, this is the last time I'll abandon you.

Most Recent Movie(s) I've Seen in Theatres:
'Iron Man 2'

Directed by Jon Favreau, starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johannson {ew}. I don't consider myself a huge comic book fan, and certainly not a comic book movie fan {mainly the Marvel films, since they tend to suck}. Considering what we've been given over the last few years; the X-Men films {awful}, the Spiderman films {alright but not the best}, the Fantastic Four films {never seen, but in my opinion they didn't look that good} and the Hulk films {haven't seen the one with Eric Bana, but I enjoyed the one with Edward Norton}, the Iron Man films were like a breath of fresh air. I absolutely loved the first one and had high to middling hopes for the second one.

It didn't disappoint. The action was great, the dialogue was awesome, especially between Tony and Pepper. Robert Downey Jr. was amazing. He's always good, but he's become a hugely favorite actor of mine. And not just because I think he's gorgeous beyond belief. I liked him a lot in 'Zodiac', and he hadn't even blipped on my radar yet.

The only issues I had were the villain/villains; Whiplash and Justin Hammer. It seemed like they could have just gone with one or the other of them. It was nowhere near as bad as the trifecta of villains in 'Spiderman 3', though. I also had an issue with the inclusion of Scarlett as the Black Widow. She seemed very unnecessary, especially since we never found out who she was, aside from her name.

Those things aside, I loved the movie, and can't wait to see it again.

Most Recent Book(s) I've Finished:
The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Volume 2: The Magicians of Caprona / Witch Week by Diana Wynne Jones

After starting this book in August of last year, I got pretty far into it, and then promptly set it aside after I started to get busier/started reading other books. Anyone who's reading this/knows me should know that I am a particularly voracious reader. As it is currently, I am reading seven books at the same time.

Anyway, all of that aside, I very much enjoyed this book. Diana Wynne Jones is always put in the young adult section of the bookstores, next to the plethora of teenaged vampire and other supernatural books. And I agree that she is a young adult writer, but she is one of the better and more accessible ones out there today.

The stories contained in the book take place in two of the nine worlds in this universe. Every person has one life in each world, and witchcraft is very common among them, though is it not in every one. Chrestomanci is a title bestowed on an enchanter with nine lives, meaning that instead of having one life in each world, he has nine in only one. This distinguishes him as a very powerful enchanter, and the only person who is able to make sure the magical balance in each world stays as it is.

The Magicians of Caprona and Witch Week, while not as compelling as the two books in volume one; Charmed Life {which got me into Wynne Jones} and The Lives of Christopher Chant, are still good reads, and will keep you interested throughout the story. The characters, mostly children or teenagers, are written well and feel very real. They grow and change as the stories progress and you can see it as you read it.

Grade: A-

Well, it seems like I've missed an entire month of blogging. If you can believe it, though, not a lot has been different from any other months, but here is a quick run down of things that have happened. I have:

-Saw Muse for the 4th time {they get better every time!}

Aside from the TOTALLY inappropriate trailer music, this movie looks GORGEOUS and I am so excited for it to come out.

Movie News:
'The Hobbit: Part 1' has two more actors in it, according to rumors; David Tennant is playing Bilbo Baggins, and Ron Perlman is playing Thorin Oakenshield. I personally wish that Simon Pegg was slated to play Bilbo {how awesome would that be?!}, but I love David Tennant, and I am definitely still seeing the film. Ron Perlman as Thorin is a pretty interesting casting choice, but I like him as well.

'Gran Torino'

Directed and starring Clint Eastwood, this was an absolutely gorgeous movie. Surprisingly hilarious, if only because Clint Eastwood as an older man spewing racial slurs at random points is pretty hysterical. The movie has a good plot, though because a lot of the younger cast hadn't acted before, a lot of the delivery of the lines was kind of awkward. I wish I hadn't waited so long to see this, but I'm glad I finally did.

Blankets by Craig Thompson.

One of the most gorgeous and sad graphic novels I've read, and one of the quickest reads, too. Which you would not expect for a novel over 500 pages. I was able to read it in a little over an hour {while still absorbing it}, and enjoyed it immensely. If you're looking for a good graphic novel, I definitely recommend Blankets

And can I just say that if Britney Spears had actually used this song {since Gaga wrote it for her}, it would have been fucking wasted. I like about 4 or 5 of Britney's songs, but she is nowhere near the "Princess/Queen of Pop". Especially now. It's safe to say Lady Gaga has far surpassed her, and she's younger than Britney, too!

First day of February. My Mom has a job interview, my Dad may have a prospect for a part time job as well as a co-worker who is planning to leave and so he might get the guy's full time hours.

Me? Well, I have no prospects like this whatsoever. Every place I've applied to has yet to contact me. I will give them one more week before I start calling to see wtf is going on.

More over, though, I'm scared. I'm scared that Mom is going to get this job, even though she really needs it, and will leave me to fend for myself. She said that she would pay off the Echo on her credit card, and my paycheck looks like it will be bigger this week, and I have the money from my investment funds to help me if I need it {always}, and the biggest financial drain on me at the moment is my health insurance {$181.70 a month, I'd rather have it, though, than have to pay $300 a month for inhalers that help me live}.

I'm also slightly depressed that I'm not back in school yet. Thanks again to money issues.

I hope I can get a nice tax return.

'Terminator 3'

I've heard lots of bad things about this film, namely that it is the worst of the Terminator movies. I've heard lots of arguments now that that honor is bestowed upon 'Terminator: Salvation' {I actually like the 4th movie}, but I have to disagree. Right from the beginning, I found myself rolling my eyes, and I laughed out loud when they showed Nick Stahl as John Connor in the future. It looked so ridiculous. The plot was predictable, and you could tell half the people didn't even want to be in it.

Out of all of the movies, though, the truck chase in this movie was the best.

Grade: C-

Different Seasons by Stephen King

One of the best short fiction collections I've ever read. I normally don't go for them, since I usually like getting lost in long novels, but I really recommend this book to anyone. Especially someone just starting out reading Stephen King, like myself.

Overall, I give it a A-, taking off some points for the fact that "Apt Pupil" was not the best.

I just finished my season 1 rewatch of 'Supernatural'. Because of a behind the scenes interview with Jensen and Jared, where Jensen mentioned there was a drinking game where whenever Sam says "Dean", you take a shot or something. After I saw this, I noticed that Sam says his brother's name an awful lot, and so decided to keep track of it throughout the series. And to keep it fair, I decided to see how many times Dean says "Sam" throughout the show as well.

Final count for season 1:
-Number of times Sam says "Dean": 138
-Number of times Dean says "Sam": 130

Seems like a lot, doesn't it? I may have missed one or two, but on the whole, this is pretty accurate.

Next time I rewatch the show, I need to keep track of Dean's Blue Steel model faces.

'Mystic River'

Directed by Clint Eastwood, starring Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbins, Laura Linney and Marcia Gay Haden, based on the book by Dennis Lehane. When Kevin Markum's, played by Sean Penn, young daughter Katie is found, he will stop at nothing to find the killers. Along for the ride are his old childhood friends; Sean Devine, played by Kevin Bacon, who is lead detective on the case, and Dave Boyle, played by Tim Robbins, who through his suspicious behaviour, becomes one of the main suspects in the murder, thanks in part to how weird he has become after a harrowing incident from their childhood. This movie had some serious potential; it was a good drama and had a stellar cast, but the last 5 minutes KILLED the entire movie for me. The ending was such a downer, and kind of stupid, that it forced me to drop the grade from a B to a C-.

Grade: C-

'Capote'

Directed by Bennett Miller, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Chris Cooper, Mark Pellegrino and Clifton Collins Jr., 'Capote' tells how Truman Capote writes the first American non-fiction novel; In Cold Blood, and how his relationship with the killers who committed the murders that inspired the book begin to define and change him as a human being. I saw this 5 years ago and only saw about half of it, but I'm glad I gave it another shot. It was beautifully executed and well done. Phillip Seymour Hoffman deserved the Oscar he got; he didn't just imitate Capote, but he became him, and shows us what good acting really is. Everyone else in the film is outstanding as well, and Clifton Collins Jr. gives a particularly haunting performance, evoking sympathy that you wouldn't expect for a murderer.

Grade: B+

Alive; Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul Read

Since I saw the movie recently, I wanted to know more about what happened {especially since Hollywood has a habit of glossing over things in a way, even with disasters}, and so found this at the bookstore. It was a fascinating story. Parts were gruesome, but it wasn't gratuitous at all, since it was what the survivors really had to go through to survive {eating the brains of the dead and in some cases stripping the dead down to just bones} for 72 days up on the mountain. The only thing that made it a bit hard for me to get through was the fact that those who died had their names changed in the film, and so I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out who was who from what I had seen in the film. I recommend this book to everyone, as well as the film, if you haven't seen it yet.

Grade: A

'MacGruber'

I wasn't on board with this until I saw the trailer {except for the fact that Jorma Taccone, one of the many men in my Boys Folder, is directing it}, and now I am 100% on board. I think this and 'The A-Team' will be my action movies to look forward to for this year.

Plus? Val Kilmer as the villain? AWESOME.

Movie News:
I was recently introduced to the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim, and reading it, I was struck by how much I hated the two main characters; Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers. I was assured by Ben that that's acceptable since both of them are total jerks. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book and then was told by Ben that it was being made into a movie, directed by Edgar Wright, and starring Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim.

I personally think Jesse Eisenberg could do a much better job as Scott, since he is a better actor and is much less ANNOYING than Michael Cera. Though, seeing this picture makes me think he might do alright:

And if Edgar Wright is directing it, it will be amazing either way. This is the kind of thing where the supporting characters are a lot better than the main ones.

-'Star Trek 2' is set to be released in summer 2012. " Paramount Pictures has set the release date for J.J. Abrams Untitled 'Star Trek' Sequel for June 29, 2012, the weekend before the 4th of July. As of now, no other picture is scheduled to compete against the film on this weekend.

Most of the character that didn't get killed off in the first "Star Trek" should be returning, but no concrete details regarding Abram's plans have been released at this time. The cast rumored to be returning include Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin."

I cannot wait for the second movie! I love all the people in the first one. I'm a casual Star Trek fan, but only because of this film.

-Jackie Earle Haley will officially not be playing Sinestro in the 'Green Lantern' film.

"Sherlock Holmes" actor Mark Strong is in talks to play Sinestro in the "Green Lantern" movie, according to director Martin Campbell.

Speaking with MTV News during the junket for "Edge of Darkness," his upcoming action thriller opening January 29, Campbell dismissed rumors that "Watchmen" actor Jackie Earle Haley was in talks for the role.

"No, that's completely wrong," said Campbell of the persistent rumor, which popped up again recently despite Haley denying any involvement with the "Green Lantern" movie. "In fact, we're in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro."

"He's not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro," he added. "If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he's very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life."

'Alive'

Directed by Frank Marshall, starring Ethan Hawke, Josh Hamilton, Illeana Douglas and Jack Noseworthy. The movie is about the Uruguayan rugby team that took a plane from Uruguay to Argentina and then crashed in the Andes, in 1972. 45 people were on the plane; the rugby team and their relatives, and of the 45, only 27 survived, only to have 8 more be killed 3 weeks later when an avalanche hit their shelter {the front part of the plane, the only part that remained}. They survived for 70 days in light clothing and minimal shelter on a small amount of food, and, eventually, by eating parts of their dead friends. It's a really really powerful movie, and really makes you think about how resilient humans are. One of the lines in the movie is, "Do you know what it is that we've lived this long the way we have? Seventy days? It's impossible. It's impossible and we did it. I'm proud to be a man on a day like this", and again, it shows how resilient humans are.

I personally don't know how I would, or if I even could, survive 70 days in a place like the Andes with minimal clothing and shelter, and even worse, having to eat the bodies of my dead friends and relatives. I think if it meant a choice between life and death, I would do it. I don't like thinking about it, because frankly it makes me feel a little ill, but...I think I would ultimately do it.

I recommend this movie to everyone. See it if you haven't. It's well worth it.

While I’ve never seen a single episode of ‘The A-Team’, this looks retardedly awesome, and I have to see it. Plus, any excuse to look at shirtless Bradley Cooper is a good one. I also enjoy that Liam Neeson and Sharlto Copley are in it. Particularly that this is Sharlto’s second film.

-On Wednesday, the Academy Awards' "visual effects branch announced on Wednesday that the shortlist of 15 movies, released in mid-December, has been whittled down to seven films.

"Avatar" heads the alphabetic list, followed by "District 9," "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," "Star Trek," "Terminator Salvation," "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "2012." No longer in contention are: "Angels & Demons," "Coraline," "Disney's A Christmas Carol," "G-Force," "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," "Sherlock Holmes," "Watchmen" and "Where the Wild Things Are."

Okay. Everyone is creaming themselves over 'Avatar', and I have to say, it deserves the attention it got for the visual effects, but why would you take out other films like 'Watchmen' and 'Where the Wild Things Are'? They have amazing special effects. 'Transformers'? Really? You can't tell what the fuck is going on half the time! 'Star Trek'? I'm sorry, but it's full of lens-flares, and while that's nice, it's not exactly something I would have picked for being nominated for visual effects. 'Terminator: Salvation'? REALLY? It was a good movie, but mediocre in almost every aspect, so why it's on there, I have no idea.

Why 'G-Force' and 'G.I. Joe' were even on this list is beyond me. Same with 'Sherlock Holmes' {What amazing visual effects were in the movie?}, though I liked the movie very much.

I really hope, thought I doubt this will happen, that 'District 9' wins for visual effects. I know it's an incredible long shot, but I am so sick of hearing about 'Avatar' at this point that I don't care

Actor News:
-Peter Sarsgaard is set to be the villain in the upcoming 'Green Lantern' movie. According to this article, he's "in talks to play Dr. Hector Hammond. Here's the first place we're seeing Martin Campbell's Lantern split from the comic book canon. In the comics, Hammond is simply a petty criminal who stumbles on a meteor that all around it with superpowers. He promptly captures some scientists and exposes them to it, and sells all their amazing inventions as his own. Eventually, he became a big-headed superbeing who could enforce his will on others. In the film, Hammond will be a doctor. He's a a brilliant pathologist but seen as an utter failure by his senator father. He discovers a meteor that grants him psychic powers. I'm sure he'll turn those powers to profit, become corrupted, and catch the all-policing eye of Hal Jordan. Then he'll become obsessed with obtaining godlike powers just to defeat Hal Jordan. You can give a man a doctorate, but you can't take away his baser motivations, can you?

Few play brainy evil as well as Sarsgaard, so I think he's a great pick. He certainly adds some dramatic weight to the movie. But it still hinges on Sinestro because whoever they cast now has to outmenace Sarsgaard."

I'm glad he's getting more work. I need more of Peter Sarsgaard in my life.

One day, I'm going to keep a running count of how many times Sam says "Dean" and how many times Dean says "Sam" in each season. I'll have to wait until September to tally up the total for season 5, but if I can put off the end of the series until then, I am good.

Even though I don't want the show to end, as I've said about 100 times now, I'd rather it end on a high note {and while it's still good}, than 3 seasons later when it's jumped the shark about five times and is simply awful, but you're only watching it for one reason.

Yeah, I can't think of a reason why you'd still be watching it then. Nope. Not a one.

'Tropic Thunder'

Directed by Ben Stiller, starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Steve Coogan, Jay Baruchel and Danny McBride {and that's just for starters}. Almost everyone has seen this movie by now, and so I'll skip the plot synopsis and go straight for the review; I went from thinking the movie was funny, but kind of just alright, to outright loving the film. I felt the same way about 'Anchorman', and noticed that both of them have the trait of getting funnier each time you see them. Even taking all that out, if the plot sucked, or you didn't like it, definitely see if for Robert Downey Jr., who pretty much MAKES the entire movie. He has some of the best and funniest lines in the whole film, and for a film that's mostly improv, that makes them even better.
