General Blogging
Well, things have changed quite a lot since my last post. When was that? May? June? In a nutshell, I had 3 jobs and an insane amount of stress. My friend moved in, which didn't really go according to plan/how we hoped it would go. I'm moving to New Hampshire on the 25th of September {12 days!} and have been under an AMAZINGLY huge amount of stress because of all of this. Did I mention that? I think I did.

Thankfully, though, I don't work anywhere again until sometime after I get to New Hampshire, thereby allowing me to wrap up things in Maryland, continue packing, pay bills and change my address for everything pertinent in my life.

Movie News:
-Stephen King's The Dark Tower series is going to be getting both a movie and a TV treatment. Words can't express how happy I am...or was until I realized that Ron Howard has directed both 'Angels and Demons' and 'The DaVinci Code'. Eeee.

I can't think of a better way to present the material, though, so I'm happy with this outcome. Now I just need to see if the casting will cause me to rage or not.

Actor News:
-There was a possibility that Martin Freeman would be playing Bilbo Baggins in the 'Hobbit' films. Apparently, this was a rumor, and it's not going to happen. While I like him as an actor, I cannot see him as Bilbo. My top two choices for Bilbo are either Simon Pegg or Michael Sheen. Considering how well the Lord of the Rings films were cast, I know I probably won't have anything to worry about.

Most Recent Movie(s) I've Seen in Theatres:
'Going the Distance'


Directed by Nanette Burstein, and starring Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis and Christina Applegate, the film is about a couple, Garrett {Justin Long} and Erin {Drew Barrymore} whose one-night stand turns into a long term relationship, and eventually a long-distance one when she has to move from New York back to San Francisco to finish her last year of grad school. Unlike most chick flicks, guys could like this and probably would. It's a little cruder than I was expecting, but that was refreshing. Justin Long and Drew Barrymore were a cute couple {especially since they did/are dating/I don't even know in real life} and most of all believable.

The supporting cast of Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day and Christina Applegate were amazing, as well, which was a nice change, especially since most supporting actors in a romantic comedy can fade into the background.

Overall, I give it an A-. It felt a bit long in some parts, but at just under 2 hours, it's almost a new phenomenon in movies today.

Grade: A-

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

After watching 'Capote' for the third or fourth time, I figured it was time to read the book. I'd never read anything of Capote's before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. He was an amazingly talented writer, and I fully intend on getting more of his books. The book was one of the first true crime novels ever written, about the deaths of the Clutter family in 1959 in Kansas and the subsequent tracking, capture and execution of their killers; Perry Smith and Richard "Dick" Hickock.

The book, while not a quick read, moves along very steadily, and never once did I lose interest in the story or what was going on. One thing that struck me was that the more I read about the killers, I felt a mixture of disgust, horror and sympathy. In 'Capote', Truman says to Perry that he doesn't want the world to see him "as a monster". And it's no small feat that Capote has managed to humanize the killers,and Perry especially, since he was the one who killed the entire family. And even after reading, and realizing that Perry was a sociopath, I still manage to feel sympathy for him because of the atrocious upbringing he had. It's no excuse for what he did, but in a way...I guess I can understand it more. He said to Truman, "They [The Clutters] never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it's just that the Clutters were the ones who had to pay for it."

I feel it's a book everyone should read.

Grade: A+

While not a new band, Metric have become one of my new favorites. I fully recommend buying their album 'Fantasies', released last year, or even just listening to the song they contributed for the 'Scott Pilgrim' soundtrack. Emily Haines' voice is a thing of beauty, and I look forward to seeing her and the band perform in October as Muse's opening band.

Well, it seems like I've missed an entire month of blogging. If you can believe it, though, not a lot has been different from any other months, but here is a quick run down of things that have happened. I have:

-Saw Muse for the 4th time {they get better every time!}
-Applied for a ridiculous amount of jobs.
-Got 3 job interviews {one of which I still have to go to}
-Got new glasses
-Saw some movies; 'Legion', 'Shutter Island', 'The Bourne Supremacy', 'The Bourne Ultimatum', 'Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire', 'State of Play' and 'Rendition'.
-Managed to save quite a lot more money
-Had an acquaintance commit suicide
-Visited my friend in West Virginia

Pretty good, all in all.

Movie You Should Be Excited About:
'Legend of the Guardians'


Aside from the TOTALLY inappropriate trailer music, this movie looks GORGEOUS and I am so excited for it to come out.

Directed by: Zack Snyder
Starring: Hugo Weaving, Emilie de Ravin, Helen Mirren, David Wenham, Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish and Ryan Kwanten.

Movie News:
'The Hobbit: Part 1' has two more actors in it, according to rumors; David Tennant is playing Bilbo Baggins, and Ron Perlman is playing Thorin Oakenshield. I personally wish that Simon Pegg was slated to play Bilbo {how awesome would that be?!}, but I love David Tennant, and I am definitely still seeing the film. Ron Perlman as Thorin is a pretty interesting casting choice, but I like him as well.

-David Schwimmer is engaged. I never thought I'd care that much about him to post something about it on here {or any of my blogs}, but there it is.

Most Recent Movie(s)/TV Show(s) I've Seen At Home:
'Gran Torino'

Directed and starring Clint Eastwood, this was an absolutely gorgeous movie. Surprisingly hilarious, if only because Clint Eastwood as an older man spewing racial slurs at random points is pretty hysterical. The movie has a good plot, though because a lot of the younger cast hadn't acted before, a lot of the delivery of the lines was kind of awkward. I wish I hadn't waited so long to see this, but I'm glad I finally did.

Grade: A-

Blankets by Craig Thompson.

One of the most gorgeous and sad graphic novels I've read, and one of the quickest reads, too. Which you would not expect for a novel over 500 pages. I was able to read it in a little over an hour {while still absorbing it}, and enjoyed it immensely. If you're looking for a good graphic novel, I definitely recommend Blankets

My love for Lady Gaga continues to grow by the day. She's like Madonna and Gwen Stefani rolled into an awesome package of...well, fabulousness and fierceness. And I don't even like Madonna.

And can I just say that if Britney Spears had actually used this song {since Gaga wrote it for her}, it would have been fucking wasted. I like about 4 or 5 of Britney's songs, but she is nowhere near the "Princess/Queen of Pop". Especially now. It's safe to say Lady Gaga has far surpassed her, and she's younger than Britney, too!

General Blogging
First day of February. My Mom has a job interview, my Dad may have a prospect for a part time job as well as a co-worker who is planning to leave and so he might get the guy's full time hours.

Me? Well, I have no prospects like this whatsoever. Every place I've applied to has yet to contact me. I will give them one more week before I start calling to see wtf is going on.

More over, though, I'm scared. I'm scared that Mom is going to get this job, even though she really needs it, and will leave me to fend for myself. She said that she would pay off the Echo on her credit card, and my paycheck looks like it will be bigger this week, and I have the money from my investment funds to help me if I need it {always}, and the biggest financial drain on me at the moment is my health insurance {$181.70 a month, I'd rather have it, though, than have to pay $300 a month for inhalers that help me live}.

I'm also slightly depressed that I'm not back in school yet. Thanks again to money issues.

I hope I can get a nice tax return.

'Terminator 3'

I've heard lots of bad things about this film, namely that it is the worst of the Terminator movies. I've heard lots of arguments now that that honor is bestowed upon 'Terminator: Salvation' {I actually like the 4th movie}, but I have to disagree. Right from the beginning, I found myself rolling my eyes, and I laughed out loud when they showed Nick Stahl as John Connor in the future. It looked so ridiculous. The plot was predictable, and you could tell half the people didn't even want to be in it.

Out of all of the movies, though, the truck chase in this movie was the best.

Grade: C-

Different Seasons by Stephen King

One of the best short fiction collections I've ever read. I normally don't go for them, since I usually like getting lost in long novels, but I really recommend this book to anyone. Especially someone just starting out reading Stephen King, like myself.

Overall, I give it a A-, taking off some points for the fact that "Apt Pupil" was not the best.

Grade: A-

General Blogging
I just finished my season 1 rewatch of 'Supernatural'. Because of a behind the scenes interview with Jensen and Jared, where Jensen mentioned there was a drinking game where whenever Sam says "Dean", you take a shot or something. After I saw this, I noticed that Sam says his brother's name an awful lot, and so decided to keep track of it throughout the series. And to keep it fair, I decided to see how many times Dean says "Sam" throughout the show as well.

Final count for season 1:
-Number of times Sam says "Dean": 138
-Number of times Dean says "Sam": 130

Seems like a lot, doesn't it? I may have missed one or two, but on the whole, this is pretty accurate.

Next time I rewatch the show, I need to keep track of Dean's Blue Steel model faces.

-Orlando Bloom has said he would be willing to reprise his role as Legolas in 'The Hobbit'. The thing about that, is that Legolas was not in The Hobbit. I could see him as Thranduil, Legolas's father, though it would be weird seeing him as the mirror image of his son, and I think too many people would be confused about it.

'Mystic River'

Directed by Clint Eastwood, starring Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbins, Laura Linney and Marcia Gay Haden, based on the book by Dennis Lehane. When Kevin Markum's, played by Sean Penn, young daughter Katie is found, he will stop at nothing to find the killers. Along for the ride are his old childhood friends; Sean Devine, played by Kevin Bacon, who is lead detective on the case, and Dave Boyle, played by Tim Robbins, who through his suspicious behaviour, becomes one of the main suspects in the murder, thanks in part to how weird he has become after a harrowing incident from their childhood. This movie had some serious potential; it was a good drama and had a stellar cast, but the last 5 minutes KILLED the entire movie for me. The ending was such a downer, and kind of stupid, that it forced me to drop the grade from a B to a C-.

Grade: C-

'Capote'

Directed by Bennett Miller, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Chris Cooper, Mark Pellegrino and Clifton Collins Jr., 'Capote' tells how Truman Capote writes the first American non-fiction novel; In Cold Blood, and how his relationship with the killers who committed the murders that inspired the book begin to define and change him as a human being. I saw this 5 years ago and only saw about half of it, but I'm glad I gave it another shot. It was beautifully executed and well done. Phillip Seymour Hoffman deserved the Oscar he got; he didn't just imitate Capote, but he became him, and shows us what good acting really is. Everyone else in the film is outstanding as well, and Clifton Collins Jr. gives a particularly haunting performance, evoking sympathy that you wouldn't expect for a murderer.

Grade: B+

Alive; Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul Read

Since I saw the movie recently, I wanted to know more about what happened {especially since Hollywood has a habit of glossing over things in a way, even with disasters}, and so found this at the bookstore. It was a fascinating story. Parts were gruesome, but it wasn't gratuitous at all, since it was what the survivors really had to go through to survive {eating the brains of the dead and in some cases stripping the dead down to just bones} for 72 days up on the mountain. The only thing that made it a bit hard for me to get through was the fact that those who died had their names changed in the film, and so I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out who was who from what I had seen in the film. I recommend this book to everyone, as well as the film, if you haven't seen it yet.

Grade: A

'MacGruber'

I wasn't on board with this until I saw the trailer {except for the fact that Jorma Taccone, one of the many men in my Boys Folder, is directing it}, and now I am 100% on board. I think this and 'The A-Team' will be my action movies to look forward to for this year.

Plus? Val Kilmer as the villain? AWESOME.

Starring: Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillipe, Val Kilmer, Maya Rudolph and Bill Hader.

Movie News:
I was recently introduced to the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim, and reading it, I was struck by how much I hated the two main characters; Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers. I was assured by Ben that that's acceptable since both of them are total jerks. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book and then was told by Ben that it was being made into a movie, directed by Edgar Wright, and starring Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim.

I personally think Jesse Eisenberg could do a much better job as Scott, since he is a better actor and is much less ANNOYING than Michael Cera. Though, seeing this picture makes me think he might do alright:


And if Edgar Wright is directing it, it will be amazing either way. This is the kind of thing where the supporting characters are a lot better than the main ones.

-'Star Trek 2' is set to be released in summer 2012. " Paramount Pictures has set the release date for J.J. Abrams Untitled 'Star Trek' Sequel for June 29, 2012, the weekend before the 4th of July. As of now, no other picture is scheduled to compete against the film on this weekend.

Most of the character that didn't get killed off in the first "Star Trek" should be returning, but no concrete details regarding Abram's plans have been released at this time. The cast rumored to be returning include Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin."

I cannot wait for the second movie! I love all the people in the first one. I'm a casual Star Trek fan, but only because of this film.

Actor News:
-Jackie Earle Haley will officially not be playing Sinestro in the 'Green Lantern' film.

"Sherlock Holmes" actor Mark Strong is in talks to play Sinestro in the "Green Lantern" movie, according to director Martin Campbell.

Speaking with MTV News during the junket for "Edge of Darkness," his upcoming action thriller opening January 29, Campbell dismissed rumors that "Watchmen" actor Jackie Earle Haley was in talks for the role.

"No, that's completely wrong," said Campbell of the persistent rumor, which popped up again recently despite Haley denying any involvement with the "Green Lantern" movie. "In fact, we're in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro."

"He's not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro," he added. "If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he's very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life."

The movie is about the Uruguayan rugby team that took a plane from Uruguay to Argentina and then crashed in the Andes, in 1972. 45 people were on the plane; the rugby team and their relatives, and of the 45, only 27 survived, only to have 8 more be killed 3 weeks later when an avalanche hit their shelter {the front part of the plane, the only part that remained}. They survived for 70 days in light clothing and minimal shelter on a small amount of food, and, eventually, by eating parts of their dead friends. It's a really really powerful movie, and really makes you think about how resilient humans are. One of the lines in the movie is, "Do you know what it is that we've lived this long the way we have? Seventy days? It's impossible. It's impossible and we did it. I'm proud to be a man on a day like this", and again, it shows how resilient humans are.

I personally don't know how I would, or if I even could, survive 70 days in a place like the Andes with minimal clothing and shelter, and even worse, having to eat the bodies of my dead friends and relatives. I think if it meant a choice between life and death, I would do it. I don't like thinking about it, because frankly it makes me feel a little ill, but...I think I would ultimately do it.

I recommend this movie to everyone. See it if you haven't. It's well worth it.

I played Wii Sports Resort yesterday at my friend Liz's house, and ended up hurting my arm since I haven't played the game in a long time. It was worth it, though, since I had a lot of fun.

'Blood Diamond'
Directed by Edward Zwick, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Honsou and Jennfier Connolly, the movie takes place in 1999 in Sierra Leone during the Sierra Leone Civil War. Like a few of Zwick's other films, this is taking place during a time of strife in a country; the Civil War in 'Glory', the Satsuma Rebellion in 'The Last Samurai', and that adds much to the tension and story in that there are many different ways the story could go. This took awhile for me to get into, but once I was in, I was hooked. Though much like Zwick's other films, it's kind of predictable after awhile. It was a good film, though.
