General Blogging
First day of February. My Mom has a job interview, my Dad may have a prospect for a part time job as well as a co-worker who is planning to leave and so he might get the guy's full time hours.

Me? Well, I have no prospects like this whatsoever. Every place I've applied to has yet to contact me. I will give them one more week before I start calling to see wtf is going on.

More over, though, I'm scared. I'm scared that Mom is going to get this job, even though she really needs it, and will leave me to fend for myself. She said that she would pay off the Echo on her credit card, and my paycheck looks like it will be bigger this week, and I have the money from my investment funds to help me if I need it {always}, and the biggest financial drain on me at the moment is my health insurance {$181.70 a month, I'd rather have it, though, than have to pay $300 a month for inhalers that help me live}.

I'm also slightly depressed that I'm not back in school yet. Thanks again to money issues.

I hope I can get a nice tax return.

'Terminator 3'

I've heard lots of bad things about this film, namely that it is the worst of the Terminator movies. I've heard lots of arguments now that that honor is bestowed upon 'Terminator: Salvation' {I actually like the 4th movie}, but I have to disagree. Right from the beginning, I found myself rolling my eyes, and I laughed out loud when they showed Nick Stahl as John Connor in the future. It looked so ridiculous. The plot was predictable, and you could tell half the people didn't even want to be in it.

Out of all of the movies, though, the truck chase in this movie was the best.

Grade: C-

Different Seasons by Stephen King

One of the best short fiction collections I've ever read. I normally don't go for them, since I usually like getting lost in long novels, but I really recommend this book to anyone. Especially someone just starting out reading Stephen King, like myself.

Overall, I give it a A-, taking off some points for the fact that "Apt Pupil" was not the best.

'Mystic River'

Directed by Clint Eastwood, starring Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbins, Laura Linney and Marcia Gay Haden, based on the book by Dennis Lehane. When Kevin Markum's, played by Sean Penn, young daughter Katie is found, he will stop at nothing to find the killers. Along for the ride are his old childhood friends; Sean Devine, played by Kevin Bacon, who is lead detective on the case, and Dave Boyle, played by Tim Robbins, who through his suspicious behaviour, becomes one of the main suspects in the murder, thanks in part to how weird he has become after a harrowing incident from their childhood. This movie had some serious potential; it was a good drama and had a stellar cast, but the last 5 minutes KILLED the entire movie for me. The ending was such a downer, and kind of stupid, that it forced me to drop the grade from a B to a C-.

Grade: C-

'Capote'

Directed by Bennett Miller, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Chris Cooper, Mark Pellegrino and Clifton Collins Jr., 'Capote' tells how Truman Capote writes the first American non-fiction novel; In Cold Blood, and how his relationship with the killers who committed the murders that inspired the book begin to define and change him as a human being. I saw this 5 years ago and only saw about half of it, but I'm glad I gave it another shot. It was beautifully executed and well done. Phillip Seymour Hoffman deserved the Oscar he got; he didn't just imitate Capote, but he became him, and shows us what good acting really is. Everyone else in the film is outstanding as well, and Clifton Collins Jr. gives a particularly haunting performance, evoking sympathy that you wouldn't expect for a murderer.

Grade: B+

Alive; Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul Read

Since I saw the movie recently, I wanted to know more about what happened {especially since Hollywood has a habit of glossing over things in a way, even with disasters}, and so found this at the bookstore. It was a fascinating story. Parts were gruesome, but it wasn't gratuitous at all, since it was what the survivors really had to go through to survive {eating the brains of the dead and in some cases stripping the dead down to just bones} for 72 days up on the mountain. The only thing that made it a bit hard for me to get through was the fact that those who died had their names changed in the film, and so I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out who was who from what I had seen in the film. I recommend this book to everyone, as well as the film, if you haven't seen it yet.

Grade: A

'Last of the Mohicans'

Directed by Michael Mann, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Wes Studi and Russell Means, based on the book by James Fenimore Cooper. I tried to read the book a few weeks ago, but got side-tracked, and so figured this would be the next best thing. I think I was wrong. It's not a bad movie, and for one that has an "epic" scale to it, it was unexpectedly short {or at least felt like it was}. But, I feel a lot of it could've been better as a whole.

The Day So Far
Finally dragged myself out of bed after being up for a long time thinking about stuff, around noon. I'm now watching 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead' for the first time, and I am immensely enjoying Tim Roth in his Guildenstern costume.

Quick rundown: I met Billy Boyd and his band, got rid of a cold in 3 days, watched a ton of movies, got into two other TV shows {'30 Rock' and 'Fringe'} and am anxiously anticipating my vacation in December.

'Zombieland'
Directed by Ruben Fleischer, starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. Normally, I'm not a fan of zombie movies. Sure, I liked the remake of 'Dawn of the Dead', but I don't actively seek them out. And no, the '28 Days/Weeks Later' movies are NOT zombie films. I'm sorry, but they aren't. Zombies are reanimated corpses, and the people in those movies are just infected with a virus that makes them not want to do anything but attack and bite other people. They then ignore all of their base body instincts, eating in particular, and then die after about three weeks {if they're not killed} of starvation or dehydration.

Anyway...'Zombieland' was amazing. Really funny, and probably one of the best zombie movies I've ever seen. The cast had great chemistry, and Woody Harrelson was great as Tallahassee. Jesse Eisenberg has now become one of my favourite actors, not the least because he is a less annoying, WAY more tolerable version of Michael Cera, who I cannot stand and want to beat his skull in.

Go see the movie if you haven't already. It's good for both gorehounds, zombie lovers, and those who just like a good comedy.

Grade: A

'Law Abiding Citizen'
Directed by F. Gary Gray, starring Gerard Butler and Jaime Foxx. It was good, but I feel it could have been better. Gerard Butler was great as the villain. Though I think anti-villain/hero would be more appropriate. Yes, he's killing people, but it didn't bother me for some reason. It was nice to see him in a heavier role than just as the romantic interest in a rom-com or as a generic action guy. There were a few too many plot holes, as well. Normally, I'm willing to overlook them, but since they were so important, I don't understand how they could be ignored.

Grade: C

'Where the Wild Things Are'
Directed by Spike Jonze, starring Max Records, Catherine Keener, and the voice talents of Forest Whitaker, Lauren Ambrose, Paul Dano, Catherine O'Hara and Chris Cooper. The movie was very beautiful; the monsters looked just like I remembered them, but as a whole, I didn't like the movie that much and still don't understand the massive amount of hype surrounding this book/movie. Yes, I liked it when I was a kid, like I said before, but I was never crazy over it. I've been told by Ben Moy that I don't have a soul because I don't like Wallace and Gromitt {Yes. I know. Get over it.}, so I'm just wondering what people will say about me for not liking 'Where the Wild Things Are'. Probably something like, "You're the Devil."

Grade: C-

'Dollhouse'
As a fan of Joss Whedon, I'd been looking forward to watching this show, despite the negative reviews I'd heard for it. I thought, "How bad could it be? Whedon shows and projects are funny and have good plots and snappy writing." I just barely got through the first episode, and the rest of the series, with the exception of episodes 11 and 12, kept me just this side of interested. I think part of the problem lay in the casting of Eliza Dushku as the main character. I don't really like her as an actress and she did not evoke any sympathy from me for her character, which she should have done. Everyone else in the show was a joy to watch, except her. The plot wasn't really that good, honestly, though the premise held incredible potential.

Grade: D

'30 Rock' season 1
One of the funniest TV shows I've seen in a long time, after 'The IT Crowd'. It's got the absurdity of 'Arrested Development', but upped by about 300. Tracey Morgan is insane, and Alec Baldwin has surprisingly wonderful comedic timing. Tina Fey is awkward and crazy, but she's great on this, too. I look forward to knowing what season 2 has in store for me.

Also, this show has a weird way of making a lot of people really attractive. Jason Sudeikis is quickly becoming a new crush of mine, and I didn't even realise I found him even remotely attractive. Will Arnett, too. Goddamn.

Grade: A

'Daybreakers'


Now, I said earlier that I wanted no more vampire movies/books/etc. for awhile at least, since we're in a deluge of vampire things, but holy shit this movie looks awesome! It's FINALLY doing something I've been wanting to see forever; what would happen if everyone were a vampire or what would happen if the humans began to die off? They kind of tiptoed over this in the movie 'Blade', when Deacon Frost made the plan of turning everyone in the world into a vampire, not really taking into account what would happen to their food supply.

From IMDB.com: "In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind."

Most Recent Movie I've Seen in Theatres:
'The Informant!', starring Matt Damon, Joel McHale, Scott Bakula, Tony Hale and Melanie Lynskey and directed by Steven Soderbergh. It started out well, but kind of...went off into nothing. Damon was very good, and it was a nice change seeing him as an all-American schlub, for lack of a better word, who was more reminiscent of Ned Flanders than of Jason Bourne. The problem I think was that the movie was just very convuluted and it felt like it stopped making sense halfway through. I need to see it again to make sure I fully get it, but for right now, these are my thoughts on it.

'Stranger Than Fiction', starring Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emma Thompson, Queen Latifah, Tony Hale and Dustin Hoffman. When this movie first came out, I didn't really rush to see it, since I'm not the biggest fan of Will Ferrell. He's pretty hilarious, but after awhile, his constant screaming {see 'Anchorman', 'Step Brothers', trailers for 'Kicking and Screaming' for what I'm talking about} gets old and really irritating. When I finally did see the movie, I was blown away by his acting. He really made me care for his character, and to my surprise, I cried a little. His and everyone else's performances in the film are spot-on. This is one of my favourite movies ever.

Grade: A

Movie You Should Be Excited About:
'Inception'


I'm not sure what this movie is about, but it looks really interesting. It has a really good ensemble cast too, not unlike 'Shutter Island'; Leo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard, Tom Berenger, Ellen Page and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It's also directed by Chris Nolan, who directed 'The Dark Knight', 'Batman Begins', 'The Prestige', 'Insomnia' and 'Memento'. So you know it will be amazing on at least a few levels.

Joe College written by Tom Perrotta, writer of Little Children, The Abstinence Teacher and Election. Of all the books he's read, this has been the least exciting. Little Children was good until the end when he jumped the shark and made the ending totally unrealistic. The Abstinence Teacher was really really good, and I have not read Election. Joe College started well, but kind of trailed off into nothing. The main character was really unlikeable, and kind of a douche, and the story just kind of...ended after awhile.
